Meet in front of Candler Library on the Quad. Parking is available at Fishburne and Peavine Parking decks.  Arrive early. We'll press play together at 7pm.

In Partnership with the NSF/NASA Center for Chemical Evolution

Answers to your questions.

Is this a Flash Mob?

Yes and no. It is a Flash Mob-inspired performance. If you like the idea of Flash Mobs like the Grand Central Station Freeze, you'll love this.

What will happen?

You will download the MP3 tracks or borrow a player from us. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to check in. You will receive instructions to help you through the journey. We will all press play at the same time. A voice will guide you along, but exactly what happens is up to you. You travel together, encounter problems, do a little work, have a lot of fun, and ultimately, achieve Group Intelligence. You might get a little dirty, but it will be worth it.

Why do I have to register in advance?  Can I just show up?

The truly good things in life take a little planning and a little effort. We need to send you the MP3 tracks in advance so you have time to get them onto your MP3 player. We also need to send you important information so your experience is as exciting as it can possibly be. So, please, sign up in advance.

Why are you filming this event?

This is an experiment in the convergence of Science and Art. The time-lapse videos will be combined with molecular chemistry demonstrations on-line following the performances. Be part of the experiment.

What's it about?

It's about water scarcity and origins of life chemistry. We are working with the National Science Foundation/NASA (yes, that NASA) Center for Chemical Evolution. 2011 is the International Year of Chemistry and we're making public art inspired by science. Order comes out of disorder. Chemistry is much more fascinating than we ever imagined.

Science?  Really?

Absolutely. Molecules self assemble, just like people, and all life is made of molecules behaving cooperatively. Diversity is necessary for molecules to survive and behave intelligently. Life lessons from chemistry. Out of Hand collaborates with cutting edge scientists, making new events inspired by new discoveries.

When should I get there?

We will start at 7pm.  Arrive at least 15 minutes early.

What should I wear?

Wear close-toed shoes, preferably with some ankle support. Dress to be moving outdoors. Dress to have fun.  You might get a little dirty. Dress for that.

Can I listen to the track in advance?

Well, we can't stop you. But resist. It will be lots more fun.

Is it dangerous?

If you wear sandals, it will be dangerous, so wear close-toed shoes. Any time you do group activities, there is a risk of twisting an ankle or something of that nature, so be careful. But, it's not dangerous. It is too dangerous for children. We are working on a children's only version of the show for the future.

How difficult is it?

Your journey depends on how much you want to do. Some parts are moderately difficult, but that's what makes it fun. You will help each other, so you can do as much or as little as you choose. However, you will be on your feet moving for about an hour.  If you can take a walk around your neighborhood, you can participate, no problem.

Can I just watch?

Sure. You'll wish you were participating, but we invite people to watch. You do NOT need a ticket to watch. Just show up and have a good time.

This program is sponsored by the NSF/NASA Center for Chemical Evolution. Funding for this program is provided by Theatre Communications Group, Possible Futures, Kilpatrick Townsend and Stockton, The Playwriting Center of Theater Emory and The Netherland-America Foundation.
